Computer\HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Softw are\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles
Hi, I am running Windows 2008 Standard X64 SP2 with latest updates this server is an Exchange 2007 server. Recently I have been having problems backing up my system state and I started poking around in this server and it seems to be a fairly akward problem. I noticed that my C:\windows\system32\config\DEFAULT file is 500MB and seems to be growing by 2MB every day. When I export this hive in regedit the file is well over 1GB. I notice that my backup processes hang for a really long time during the part where it backs up the registry so common sense says that these two issues are related. If I open the .reg file I created in notepad/wordpad I notice that there are a ton of references to different mailboxes stored in exchange 2007. Is this server storing mailbox data in the registry? that seems like a rather big mistake to me. does anyone have any advice here to figure out what is going on? thanks, I have found the actual key that is making the file so large, it is: Computer\HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles I hope this helps make it easier. It turns out that our backup software has a bug that makes it do this. Is there a safe way to clean these out? -Drew

That key contains Outlook profiles. That's where I'd look. And I'd post in the Outlook forum: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/outlook/threadsEd Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems."

Hi Drew, Do you install Outlook on the Exchange 2007? As Ed said, the key is for Outlook profile. If you delete it, the Outlook profile will be deleted. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Hi Ashandy, We actually have an update coming out soon that is going to fix this issue, the problem occurs when Retrospect is backing up your Exchange mailboxes and a profile gets created each time and it is not getting cleaned out after the program is finished. Until the release is available we recommend backing up the database/storage group only until the fix is available. You can contact us directly about this issue if you wish at www.retrospect.com/support. - Retrospect Support
